A Bit About Me
Dr Teshamae Monteith is a neurologist dedicated to advancing headache medicine and neurological care. She earned her medical degree from the University of Miami, where she developed a deep appreciation for the brain and a passion for clinical innovation to alleviate suffering. She completed her neurology residency at the New York University School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship at the Thomas Jefferson University Jefferson Headache Center, where she developed a comprehensive approach to headache management. She then pursued a second fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, contributing to research on migraine and other headache disorders, and is a co-recipient of the Wolff Award under the direction of Peter J. Goadsby, MBBS, MD, PhD. She has investigated migraine, vascular comorbidities, and imaging findings under the direction of the late Dr Ralph Sacco through the Northern Manhattan Study, funded by the NIH. She is a fellow of the American Headache Society (AHS) and the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).
Currently, Dr Monteith serves as a Professor of Clinical Neurology, Chief of the Headache Division, and Fellowship Director for Headache Medicine at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine. Committed to training the next generation of specialists, she became the founding chair of the New Investigator and Trainee Section of the AHS. She has also been a member of the International Headache Society’s Migraine Practice Guidelines and the Regional Task Force. She is a co-recipient of the AAN’s Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum Advocate of the Year Award for work to improve research and treatment of veterans with post-traumatic headache and migraine.
Dr Monteith is an influential voice in the field, serving on the Board of Directors and as co-chair of the editorial board for the American Migraine Foundation. She previously held a position on the Board of Trustees for the International Headache Society, where she now co-chairs the Membership Committee. She is also on the editorial board for the journals Cephalalgia and Neurology and has played a pivotal role in medical education as Senior Host of the Neurology Podcast, Deputy Editor for Neurology Minute, and Associate Editor for the Continuum Audio podcast.
Dr Monteith has served as a peer reviewer for numerous high-impact journals, advisory boards, and grant panels. She has delivered regional, national, and international lectures on migraine and headache disorders and has contributed as a guest editor for the New England Journal of Medicine Group. She was also featured in Lancet Neurology’s "Lifeline." With her expertise in clinical care, research, and education, Dr Monteith is committed to advancing headache medicine, improving patient outcomes, and fostering the next generation of headache specialists and neurologists.
